2008 Training Camp Moved to Oxnard? NooOOooooO

February 12th, 2008 by Joe Rodriguez

Came across this nugget of bad news for die hard fans in Texas. This is just plain stupid, by both parties; one being the City of San Antonio…how do you guys screw this up, and how do you choose to lose out on MAJOR revenue for the city, just dumb. The other party, Jerry Jones, could have moved the training camp to another location within the state, I mean, c’mon…Oxnard, CA… This is very disappointing news.

Cowboys | Team to move training camp

Clarence E. Hill, Jr., of the Star-Telegram, reports the Dallas Cowboys are close to finalizing a deal that would move the team’s 2008 training camp to Oxnard, Calif., which hosted the Cowboys training camp from 2003-06. The Cowboys are forced to find an alternate location for their 2008 training camp because of a conflict with the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

NFL Season Officially Over, What’s Next?

February 10th, 2008 by Joe Rodriguez

Seems like yesterday when I was in San Antonio, weathering the blistering heat waiting to get inside the Alamodome. Fast forward and the Cowboys were one and done, the Super Bowl came and went, and now the last game of the year has officially ended the NFL Season.

The Pro Bowl is in the bag, and our last time to see our boys in action is done as well. It’ll be almost half a year until we see some decent preseason action; however, being in the information age, there will be no downtime for die hard fans, we have the best Cowboys forums and Blogs amongst NFL fan communities. We still have alot of interesting time between now and training camp, so enjoy the upcoming rumors and everything else that comes with the off-yet-not-season.
Upcoming Key Dates:

February 7 - Commencement of 15-day designation period for Franchise and Transition Players

February 11 - Waiver process begins

February 20-26 - NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana

February 21 - Deadline for teams to designate Franchise and Transition Players

February 28 - Deadline for submission of Qualifying Offers by teams to their Restricted Free Agents whose contracts have expired and to whom they desire to retain a Right of First Refulsal/Compensation

February 28 - Deadline for teams to submit offer of minimum salary to retain exclusive negotiating righs to their players with fewer than three seasons of free agency credit whose contracts have expired

April 25 - Deadline for teams to exercise Right of First Refusal to Restricted Free Agents

April 25 - Deadline for old team to exercise Right of First Refusal to Restricted Free Agents

What I want to see happen first is getting Barber locked in, and staying in Dallas. Re-sign Hamlin next. The rest will be interesting, let’s all take a deep breath now, the fun offseason is here, let’s go!

Its All About the Secondary

February 1st, 2008 by Joe Rodriguez

Remember that corney trivia show “The Weakest Link” ? Well, our secondary is the Weakest Link, and we’ll be saying goodbye to several of the all-star toast masters this offseason. I’m talking about Nate Jones and Jacques Reeves.

All this jive about trading up for an unproven running back is a pipe dream, and anyone endorsing such a manuever is also smoking crack. What this team needs is a secondary. Think about it, who do we really have? We have Terence Newman, and that’s it. Ken Hamlin SHOULD be re-signed asap; but, its also likely that he can make even more money elsewhere. Henry is one of those Parcells bust free agent signings, injury prone, gets burnt alot, just not good enough, just average. Roy Williams is a wasted spot, and an easy target if you want to convert a 3rd and long… We don’t have a championship secondary, and we certainly do not have a depth.

The mission should be about upgrading the secondary first and foremost and nothing but. I’ll entertain the idea of drafting a WR and another DE, but we need to fix that secondary. Parcells inherited Roy Williams, and drafted Terence Newman, but after that he was unable to fix the secondary. He tried various players at safety and cornerback, but at the end of the day it was a disaster. Phillips comes in and adds Ken Hamlin, ok, so now we’re getting somewhere. Phillips needs to have some command and get the secondary going, find us the next Cromartie!

Its all about upgrading the secondary or bust…seriously.
